Since the 1960s, Muslim students, faculty, and staff at the University of Rhode Island, as well as residents of the Kingston area, dreamed of having a local mosque. Finally, in 2001, the community established Masjid Al-Hoda. (The Arabic word "Hoda" means "guidance.") Since then, it has provided a space of worship for Muslims in Kingston and the surrounding area. It also works to establish bridges of tolerance, harmony and understanding between Muslims, the American society at large and people of other faiths through monthly potluck gatherings.
Friday (Jumu'ah) prayers begin at 1:00PM. Masjid Al-Hoda hosts halaqas (gatherings for the purpose of knowledge) on one Saturday a month.
