PROVIDENCE—Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts today recognized Rhode Island’s exemplary high school seniors at the 2008 ceremony of the Lieutenant Governor’s

Leadership Awards, granting awards to sixty three students from across Rhode Island. Lt. Gov. Roberts was also joined by keynote speaker Anthony Maione, the President/ CEO

Dr. Nasser Zawia

URI Pharmacy Professor

January 9, 2008 – A University of Rhode Island pharmacy professor Dr. Nasser Zawia has found for the first time evidence of Alzheimer’s-like disease linked to lead.

Faculty Excellence (Leadership/Service) Award - Diversity Award 2004
Dr. Nasser's influence resonates throughout the campus community. He is committed to diversity and multiculturalism and his commitment and dedication is infectious to those who have had the pleasure of working with him. Diversity is not a buzz word to him and as an Instructor believes that he has a duty to "emphasize the need for inclusion in my instruction" as well as articulating the need for majority and minority students to understand different views and perspectives in order to avoid stereotyping one another Dr. Nasser helped establish the Muslim Community Center of Kingston so that "Muslim students can have their own safe place to worship and conduct their affairs." Dr. Nasser reaches out beyond his ethnic group to collaborate with others as well. He is a member of the Faculty and Staff of Color and is a voice of reason, inclusion and determination to effectuate change.

Freshman honored as University Scholar

INGSTON, R.I. – February 8, 2007 – The top University of Rhode Island students of the 2005-06 freshman class were chosen to be formally inducted as University

College Scholars – the top students in their entire freshman class. These students received a certificate of achievement and $500 check from the URI Alumni Association

in recognition of their success.To be considered as a University College Scholar, students must earn a minimum of a 3.9 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 4.0 in their

freshman year. Then, of the about 30 candidates, the students compete for the award based on contributions that they have made outside of the classroom to the community and university. (http://www.uri.edu/news/releases/?id=3862>)

RI Foundation honors Providence resident for her lifelong commitment to human rights

Sis. Persis Stanton recives The Rhode Island Foundation’s Merit Award for Outstanding Community Service.Owen Heleen, director of special funds at The Rhode Island Foundation,

presented her with a certificate of merit and a $500 award.Clifford Montiero, president of the Providence branch of the NAACP, has known Mrs. Stanton for more than 25 years and shares, “Persis is one of the closest allies and supporters of the Civil Right Movements and the NAACP.

She’s held elected positions and appointed positions and all the while never wavered with her own independent volunteer efforts. Her technical assistance and knowledge of equal opportunity laws is immeasurable. Persis Stanton’s outstanding professionalism that she had during her working career (Mrs. Stanton worked for more than 35 years in state and federal government service.) continues to be demonstrated in her devotion to serve anyone in need.”

Br. Ali Shihadeh

DIVISION II LINEMAN OF THE YEAR AWARD - Ali Shihadeh

 

May 8th 2004
Ali Shihadeh was honored for his talents on both the field om at seprate banquest receptions. Shihadeh was named the Division II Lineman of the Year at the Gridiron Club ceremony held at the 1025 club in Johnston R.I.Ali Shihadeh, receiving the top linman honor was justice served. After being left off the All-State teams, Shihadeh was able to reap the praise from D-II coaches who saw him play plenty over the course of his time doning the Orange & Black."This award selected by ther Division II coaches vindicates a gross injustice by not having Ali selected on neither the FIrst or Second All-State teams."

 

 

 

Br. Muhammad Shloul

DIVERSITY AWARD 2002 - Muhammad Shloul

Muhammad Shloul was selected for his leadership in conducting a campaign for Student Government Vice President, and his service as an officer in several student organizations. He has been elected Secretary of the URI Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), the Academic Excellence Chair of the Northeast Regional Association of NSBE, the Public Relations Chair of Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity; President of the URI Chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineering (AICHE); and an Executive Board Member of the Resident Assistant Board of Advisors. He has organized workshops on racism, homophobia, Islam, diversity, and student success for on- and off- campus populations. A senior majoring in Chemical Engineering, he will be a summer intern at Merck Pharmaceuticals in Pennsylvania, and plans to eventually found a chemical engineering company.

 

Dr. Mohammed Sharif

DIVERSITY AWARD 2002 - Dr. Mohammed Sharif

 

Dr. Mohammed Sharif was selected for his leadership and service in promoting understanding of Islam and in promoting dialogue between Muslims, Christians, and Jews in Rhode Island and New England. A Professor of Economics, his research interests included global poverty and income inequality, hunger and homelessness, economic development, and relations between the United States and Third World Nations. He is Founding Coordinator of the URI Muslim Cultural Heritage Program, Founding President of the Southern Rhode Islamic Society, and the President of the Islamic Council of New England. His leadership provided the catalyst for the formation of the URI Muslim Student Association. His interest in outreach has lead him to become active in the Rhode Island Harbor Heritage Museum, the Rhode Island Committee for Nonviolent Initiatives, the South County Interfaith Council, and the New England Muslim-Christian Dialogue.
